Trump Attacks Civil Rights Hero Rep. John Lewis for Calling Him an Illegitimate President

Over the weekend, President-Elect Donald Trump went on yet another Twitter rant, this one aimed at Representative John Lewis (D-GA) for comments the Congressman made about the man who is about to become the next President of the United States.

When asked in an interview with Chuck Todd for NBC’s Meet the Press if he planned on forging a relationship with Trump, Lewis said he doesn’t believe Trump is a legitimate President:

“I believe in forgiveness. I believe in trying to work with people. It’s going to be hard. It’s going to be very difficult. I don’t see this President-Elect as a legitimate President.”

Lewis then shared his concern over Russia meddling in the 2016 presidential election:

“I think the Russians participated in helping this man get elected, and they helped destroy the candidacy of Hillary Clinton….I think there was a conspiracy on the part of the Russians and others to help him get elected. That’s not right. It’s not fair. That’s not the open democratic process.”

The Congressman also revealed that, unlike Clinton, he will be a no-show at Trump’s Inauguration:

I don’t plan to attend the Inauguration. It will be the first one that I’ll miss since I’ve been in the Congress. You cannot be at home with something that you feel that is wrong.”

As tends to be the case when insulted, Trump fired back on Twitter over the course of three tweets:

Something that stands out from these tweets is that Trump claims Lewis is “all talk, talk, talk–no action or results,” which couldn’t be further from the truth.

It’s particularly disturbing for Trump to make comments like these considering he has a history of making racist comments and discriminating against people of color, and, with all that in mind, he’s attacking a civil rights hero and a leader of the Civil Rights Movement who was beaten by mobs during protests. (Not to mention, all of this is occurring the weekend before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 16.)

Lewis noted that physical brutality in a DNC fundraising e-mail, according to TIME political reporter Zeke Miller:

“I’ve been beaten, bloody, tear-gassed, fighting for what’s right for America. I’ve marched at Selma with Dr. King. Sometimes that’s what it takes to move our country in the right direction. We refuse to stop now. We’re not done fighting for progress. We’re ready for the next four years.”

Democrats were obviously quick to call out Trump for his latest Twitter rant. And there are some Republicans and conservatives joining them as well, with Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) saying that Lewis has “changed the world” and 2016 Independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin calling Lewis “an American patriot.”

We’ll wait and see if there’s any further backlash against Trump in the days to come.
