Politicians Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day every year, kids have a day off from school and many businesses are closed. So while a lot of people are happy to have a day off, we should always remember what this holiday is all about: celebrating the birthday of a civil rights icon and reflecting on a period of our country’s history that should never be forgotten and that we should learn from.

Politicians (and others in the political arena) on both sides of the aisle have expressed their thoughts about this important day. These are just a handful of those tweets:

President Barack Obama:

First Lady Michelle Obama:

President-Elect Donald Trump:
(Note: This comes just two days after Trump attacked another civil rights icon, Representative John Lewis.)

Vice President-Elect Mike Pence:

Labor Secretary (and DNC Chair Candidate) Tom Perez:

Former President Bill Clinton:

Chelsea Clinton:

Representative John Lewis (D-GA):

Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ):

Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA):

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo:

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand:

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie:

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY):

It must also be noted that some members of Congress who voted against making this a national holiday took to Twitter to mark the occasion, which is ironic:

Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL):

Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA):
